Unless you're planning on purchasing a high-end grand piano in the $25,000 + range, consider buying the (electronic) Yamaha CP 300 instead. At $2,000. it's cheaper than a grand or any new acoustic upright piano and you won’t have any tuning or repair costs... ever! It's not susceptible to changes in room temperature or humidity levels, so you can place it anywhere in the home without risk of damage. (Real pianos don't like direct sunlight, changes in temperature, excessive dryness or excessive humidity.) Just like a grand piano, the keys on the CP-300 are “proportionally weighted” - Heavier key weight in the low end and lighter as the keys go upward into the high end - or what is also known as a "graded hammer" keyboard action. This type of keyboard action is as good as it gets in an electric piano and is better than all but the most expensive acoustic uprights. Additionally, because the CP 300's pedals are connected by a cable, the height of the pedal can be raised for young students by using a step-stool. Learning the pedals concurrently and not having to wait until the student’s legs grow to reach the pedals is very important. As a used instrument, the Yamaha CP-300 (as well as the previous models: Yamaha P-200 & P-250) are highly sought after and they all have extremely high resale values. If you buy the Yamaha CP-300, P-250 or P-200 and Johnny decides he doesn't want to play anymore, you'll have no trouble selling it. The CP-300 is an excellent choice for any student at any level.
