CHILDREN'S

RULES OF PRACTICING

"It's the QUALITY of the practice time,

not the QUANTITY,

that leads to improvement."

Initially, five to ten minutes of easy-going, relaxed practice is best. As the months progress, lessons become more complex and more practice time is required, so about fifteen to twenty minutes should become the norm. Mid-point in the method book, students should be practicing twenty-five to thirty minutes a day. By the end of the method book, at least forty-five. Once the method book is done and the Hanon book is introduced, an hour a day should be the norm. (The hour can always be broken into smaller time segments during the day!)

Follow the rules:

Feet flat on the floor or "fake floor" (a small, plastic step-stool)

SIT UP STRAIGHT

Shoulder's relaxed

Arms slightly away from your sides

Wrists should be loose and level with the keyboard

Play with curved fingers on white keys

Don't let the first joint "cave-in"

Fingers do all the work - Don't push down with the hand or arm

The thumb goes 'up and down' all by itself - no help from the hand

Count your timing out-loud!

"Turtle Slow Until You Know!"

Practice slowly, and apply each and every technique rule to every note played without exception!

"The slower you practice, the faster you'll learn."

Practice slowly and methodically: A beginner has nothing to gain by trying to attempt a fast, performance tempo until they've mastered their:

"Technique, Notes & Timing"
