Students are taught in a kind, respectful and sincere manner. Endless patience and positive reinforcement are significant elements of each lesson.
All students under twenty begin with a classical, conservatory method that includes proper posture, correct hand/wrist position and appropriate finger, wrist and arm technique. This approach focuses on minimizing motion and using the smallest possible joint to achieve the desired sound. Constant emphasis on minimizing motion and using the proper hand and finger technique directs the student to strike the keys with the appropriate amount of physical mass and with an appropriate wrist movement and finger form. The final result is that students are able to create musical sounds at the keyboard that are brilliantly clear, accurate and effortless.
Students are taught to sight read notes on the grand staff by letter name. They also learn to memorize the look and sound of different intervals and groups of notes. Students are required to diligently count rhythms aloud and maintain musical momentum during lessons.
Utilizing a unique method developed by Upscale Piano Lessons, students have a positive experience learning the different pitched and rhythmic sounds of music using interactive teaching tools and playing music related games.
After accomplishing a minimum level of sight reading ability and keyboard technique, students who wish to break from the classical tradition will learn to chart and play songs directly from original artist's recordings. Artists such as Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson and many contemporary rock band's songs are selected by the student for charting and performance at recitals.
At every level of playing, students are encouraged to think about what type of sound they are creating and to use their own ears to find their own musical expression. They are also encouraged not to mindlessly parrot the teacher's or any other pianist's interpretation. Students are allowed to think and listen for themselves and are firmly redirected only when drifting toward a bizarre or technically inappropriate performance.
Students are always reminded that the purpose of playing the piano is to make magic: Playing the correct notes is the first step, making magic fill the room is the ultimate goal.
